Jabal Qunut Group Hike
29 June 2018 @ 04:30 - 10:30 +03Free
Friday we will HIKE to the top of Jabal Qunut (525m) the highest point in the near Hejaz. This is a 10km hike (not a run) using a route that starts from the H50 Base Camp. We will hike up the H50 South Loop…at the top, go off “road” and on up to the summit of Qunut. Then we will hike down the west “road”, a 330m continuous descent, thru a quarry (abandoned on Fridays) and back to Base Camp via a canyon to the north.
This is a “no drop” hike. We will stay together. You will not need to navigate. This hike will require reasonable fitness and some agility. Although we will not pass any locations where somebody has died, the total climbing on this hike is 500m. Even though the hike is designed for everybody, Qunut veterans are also encouraged to join to help along the way and maybe even share some tall tales!
George Harrison wrote: Here comes the sun; Here comes the sun; and I say; It’s all right… Obviously, George never visited the Hejaz in Summer.
With heat building after 9-10AM and a 3-3.5 hr hike time, we want to start early…We plan to leave Jeddah at 4:30 AM, start hiking by 6 AM, be on top of Qunut by 7:30 AM, and be back to BC by 9:30. Forecast on Friday AM is 28C at 6AM and by 11am 35C…10km/hr NW winds.
Gear: Plan to carry at least 2-3 liters of water. Since this is a hike, a backpack will work if you don’t have a hydration pack. You may also want to bring: light gloves (we will be navigating over rocks and loose descents), sunglasses, screen, hat or Hejaz Ultra buff, and bring something to snack on while we are on top of Qunut.
Experience great views, not just on top, but all the way up…great adventure…great pictures…a beautiful morning. It will also be a good tune up for the Ash Shafa hike next weekend. And if you haven’t kept up with fitness lately, an adventure opportunity that fits you. Come join us!
We will organize cars, drivers (men and women!), meeting points and directions to Base Camp later in the week when we have an idea on attendance.
